Annual Physical Q & A

Why are annual physicals important?

A physical examination is an essential component to maintaining every patient’s overall health and well-being. A thorough check up is recommended annually to prevent a wide array of health conditions, as well as, diagnose problems at their earliest, most treatable stage. In addition, an annual physical is an opportunity to develop the provider-patient relationship, establishing a comfort level and familiarity before a patient becomes ill. It is also valuable in determining each patient’s general health status, and provides the chance to discuss any ongoing pain, symptoms or questions a patient has.

What should I expect at my annual physical exam?

Each patient’s vitals are taken and recorded, including weight, height, body mass index (BMI), and blood pressure. Blood panels are ordered to measure blood sugar and cholesterol levels, immunizations are updated, and heart and lung function and reflexes are examined. Dr. Zhong or Dr. Sobhy will also check the skin for any unusual marks or growths. Patients may sit or stand during this portion of the exam. Next, the abdomen and other parts of the body are inspected. After the examination, the doctor will discuss any problem areas and make recommendations, if needed. When necessary, the doctor will refer patients for follow-up tests, such as an electrocardiogram (EKG) or mammogram.

How should I prepare for my annual physical?

In addition to filling out the necessary paperwork provided here on our website, Dr. Sobhy and Dr. Zhong suggest bringing along a list of all current medications being taken. In addition to prescriptions, this should include over-the-counter drugs and herbal supplements. They also recommend making a list of any symptoms or pains that the patient is experiencing, as well as, any other questions. New patients should also bring along the results from any recent tests to their physical appointment.
